The End of Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive
(European Directive - 2000/53/EC) came into force on 21st October 2000.
All EU States must transpose the directive into national law by 21st
April 2002.
The objectives of the directive are;
End of Life vehicles can only be treated by authorised and approved
treatment facilities, which can meet the tightened environmental
treatment standards.
Economic operators to establish adequate systems of collection of ELV
The last owner will be able to return their vehicle into these systems
free of charge from 2007.
Requires the car manufacturer to pay “all or a significant part” of
the costs of take back and treatment from January 2007.
Achieve rising re-use, recycling and recovery targets, which must be
met by the economic operators by January 2002 and 2015.
Restricts the use of heavy metals in new vehicles from July 2003. |
